Star Trek: Deep Space 9 U.S.S. Defiant



This model was produced with the help of a non-CAD 3D mesh originally made by A.Klemm (Nightfever). As I'm a big fan of "Star Trek: Deep Space 9", I wanted a Defiant model in 1:350 scale to go with other Trek kits I have in this scale and planned to produce my own before coming across Alex's. He did such a great job that I asked his permission to use his model to build up something printable, which I would freely distribute.

Of the surface appearance of Alex's model, I changed very little besides increasing the geometry resolution to be more suitable for printing and tweaking some details. Also, Alex had some really cool-looking coils inside the main engines but those were neither on the physical studio model nor the CG model used in FX shots. Since I have one of the CG models from the show, I changed the interior of the engines to match that. In breaking down the model, I tried to put the break lines at natural seams or panel lines. To make it fit into the desired envelope, I did need to split the fore and and aft main sections down the middle. You'll note in the images that I've made the circular section at the top removable so a battery case can be accessed for those who want to use one.

The complete Defiant model consists of 39 separate STL files. For printing, the parts are designed to fit in a build volume of 218mm x 122mm x 200mm. Locating pins and tabs are included on many parts to aid in assembly and parts that might be printed in clear in order to light the model are labeled as such.

The completed Defiant model measures about 19.2" x 3" x 14.25".
